Development

We are committed to the training and development of our staff. We aim to create a learning environment in which staff are encouraged to participate in events and activities relevant to their work-related professional and personal development. To ensure you receive relevant training, we will work with you to create a personally tailored development plan.

  • Induction

  • On the Job

  • Mentoring

  • Training and CPD

  • Further Study

We provide you with a comprehensive induction program designed to equip you with all the necessary knowledge and skills to operate effectively in the firm.

The induction program is tailored for each new member of staff and covers an overview of the firm and our structure, training on our systems, processes and policies and a personalised introduction to the members of your team.

Attending a training course can provide you with new thinking and theory, however it is through the practice and application of this theory that the real learning and development occurs and new skills are embedded. For this reason on the job learning is considered to be of greatest importance, and is enhanced and complemented by guided learning through supervision, coaching and mentoring. As you create your personal development plan with us, you will have the opportunity to discuss the types of on the job experience you are interested in and where possible we will assist you to do this.

Mentoring relationships can play a critical role in a person’s career through providing a safe environment in which to explore ideas, enhance professional skills, increase knowledge and develop life skills.

Mentoring at Jackson McDonald is a two-person relationship between a more experienced person (a mentor) and a less experienced person (a mentee), and is based on the specific needs of the mentee at the time. The needs of the mentee may not necessarily be related to work, but to personal growth, career prospects or requiring someone to listen to their concerns.

The mentoring relationship differs from coaching in the following way: coaching is performance driven. The purpose of coaching is to improve the individual's performance on the job. This involves either enhancing current skills or acquiring new skills or tactics to achieve the goal. Once the person being coached successfully acquires the skills, the coach is no longer needed.

We provide a rich and well structured CPD program that enables you to meet your professional obligations and keep abreast of new developments. We encourage our talented staff to share their knowledge and raise their profile internally by presenting at these sessions.

In addition to our CPD program, we also support a range of training activities for staff who need to further enhance their legal or general professional skills. These activities are planned as part of your personal development plan and our Learning and Development Advisor will provide guidance and support in identifying in-house or external courses.

We are happy to consider and requests for supporting you through a period of relevant further study. Our learning and development advisor can chat with you about your aspirations and provide advice and guidance on courses.
